The next generation Volkswagen Passat will borrow technology from the all-electric ID.  models

We've caught the new Volkswagen Passat testing several times before, but these latest spy photos give us our best look yet at VW's new large station wagon.  The B9-generation Passat will be unveiled in station wagon and sedan form in 2023, with the sedan being phased out.

The similarly sized VW Arteon occupies the VW executive sedan segment, so the Passat sedan is unlikely to continue.  We've also only spotted test cars in station wagon body styles.

These spy photos, taken from a test car on public roads, show that the new Passat will not mark a huge upheaval in terms of exterior design.  Details such as headlights that merge into a slimmer grille and diagonal stripes to the door handles will be carried over from the current car.  The upper grille is closed, which helps to improve the drag coefficient.  Further down we can see a grille, fake fog lights and large air intakes on the sides of the front bumper.

The Passat looks longer from the side, which will help differentiate it from the Golf - which has grown to its current eighth-generation form.  Towards the rear, separate rear brake light assemblies are preferred over a strip of taillights such as those on the ID.4 and ID.5.

VW's family car has been moved from its traditional home in Emden, Germany to make way for SUVs and ID.4s.  Aero.  Instead, the new generation Passat and Škoda Superb will be produced in Bratislava on the same platform, using the same platform.  Several iterations of the MQB platform have emerged since the launch of the current Passat, with the next using the latest MQB Evo underpinnings.

The Passat's wheelbase needs to be stretched to match the Superb's 2.85 metres.  While this should result in more legroom for rear passengers, the extra length will also help improve boot space, with the station wagon model in particular carving out a new niche for the Passat as a non-SUV vehicle or brand  s most practical utility vehicle.  based offer.

All-electric drive will be supported by the next production version of the ID.  The base eHybrid model will get around 200 hp, but the more powerful GTE is likely to come with a bigger battery than the 13 kWh unit used in the current Passat GTE .

Diesel's popularity in this segment has declined in recent years, but the Passat may continue with TDI options.  Under the hood, we should see the latest version of the brand's turbocharged 2.0 TDI block, in states ranging from 148 hp to 197 hp.  There will also be 4MOTION all-wheel drive, which may feature in the revived Alltrack model.

Petrol will play a supporting role but will be an important bridge to an expanded plug-in hybrid offering, with two options planned.

The basic hybrid model will get around 200 per power, but the more powerful GTE model will likely launch with the larger 13 kWh battery used in the current Passat GTE.

The upgraded charging technology will match the larger package, with a jump from 3.6kW to 11kW of AC charging.

With the looming ban on internal combustion engine cars in 2030, the next Passat could be the last petrol or diesel offering in the UK.
